
The European Commission has predicted that Europe, a key player in development co-operation, will face a deep and wide ranging recession this year. Certainly, the global economic crisis is bound to have a major impact on developing countries. On 27 May 2009 a one-day policy forum entitled "Fighting the global recesion's storm: Implications for European development co-operation?" will take place at Residence Palace in Brussels / Belgium. The EDC2020 project will organize a special session at the UN-IHDP Open Meeting which will take place from 26 to 30 April 2009 in Bonn/Germany. The panel entitled "Financing adaptation to climate change: What is Europe’s role?" is scheduled for 30 April 2009, 11 am. The Open Meeting is entitled "Social Challenges of Global Change".

On 22 April 2009 ODI, IDS and DIE will jointly organise a one-day workshop in Brussels. The workshop will focus on "European Devleopment Co-operation to 2020: Can Europe meet climate change challenges for development co-operation?".

On 12 March 2009, FRIDE hosted the second international seminar on the links between European polices on development co-operation, energy security and the promotion of good governance. The seminar focused especially a special on the African region.

On 10 March 2009 a roundtable entitled "The impact of the financial and economic crisis on global development: What's the envisaged (leadership) role for Europe?" took place in Bonn/Germany. The outcomes of the event which gathered more than 120 participants have been summarised in a report.

On February 12 and 13, the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) hosted a workshop designed to identify and assess the key forces that could shape the future direction of African development as an input to a scenario-building process that will unfold over the coming year. The workshop, organized in collaboration with the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI), brought together some 20 development researchers for an intensive but informal exchange of ideas.

FRIDE has published a book edited by Richard Youngs, work package leader of the EDC2020 work package on energy security. The book examines how the EU’s general approach to energy security has played out in the specific political contexts of different countries and regions.
EADI-Portal offers a monthly bulletin featuring recent research outcomes on various development issues. The March 2009 issue presents research on the financial crisis and fragile states.

The terms of reference / a call for expressions of interest for the evaluation of the EDC2020 project has been published. The main purpose of the evaluation will be to help participants, other stakeholders and donors to learn from the experience of the project. Proposals including a concept note (max. 6 pages) and budget should be sent before 30 April 2009 to akdeniz(AT)eadi.org.

A call for papers on the theme of ‘MDGs After 2015’ has been published by EADI, IDS, DSA and Actionaid. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the IDS Bulletin and inform the debate at a DSA/EADI/IDS/Action Aid High-Level Policy Forum on 23 June 2009 in Brussels. The extended deadline for submission is 15 May 2009.
